How to choose a shower head

The key to choosing a showerhead is to match your home's water pressure with your needs, while also considering the water flow experience, material durability, and practical functionality. Follow these four steps for precise selection.

1. Focus First: Water Dispenser and Water Pressure Compatibility

The water discharge method directly impacts the shower experience, so it's crucial to consider your home water pressure to avoid weak or overpowering water after purchase.

Confirm your home water pressure: First, use a simple method to determine the water pressure – turn on the bathroom faucet. If the water flows in a steady, columnar pattern (not intermittent or sporadic), the water pressure is normal (0.2-0.5 MPa), suitable for most showerheads. If the water flow is thin or intermittent, it indicates low pressure, so consider a "low-pressure booster" showerhead (with a built-in booster impeller to increase water pressure).

Choose the water mode based on your needs: Different modes cater to different needs. It's recommended to choose a "multi-mode adjustable" model to suit the needs of the whole family.

Rain mode: The water flow is even and wide, making it ideal for a quick, relaxing shower. Pulse mode: Powerful water flow (similar to a massage) can be used to cleanse the scalp or muscles, making it ideal for those who prefer a more intense cleansing experience.

Mixed mode: Combines rain and pulse modes for a comfortable and effective cleansing experience, perfect for family use.

Mist mode: Fine and gentle water flow is suitable for children, the elderly, or those with sensitive skin. Some models offer adjustable mist volume.

2. Quality: Material and craftsmanship determine durability.

Showerheads are exposed to water and moisture for extended periods, so the material and craftsmanship are crucial to preventing rust and leaks.

Main body material: Prefer a full copper or copper alloy body. They are corrosion-resistant and rust-resistant, and are lightweight (typically weighing ≥500g). They offer a service life of 5-8 years. For those on a budget, consider "ABS engineering plastic + chrome plating," which offers a smooth and easy-to-clean surface. However, be sure to choose a thicker model (body thickness ≥2mm) to prevent deformation after long-term use. Overhead/Hand Shower Panels: Silicone outlet holes are recommended. Scale buildup can be removed with a gentle rub, eliminating the need for cleaning. A 304 stainless steel panel is also recommended, as it's scratch-resistant, but scale needs to be cleaned with a toothbrush. Avoid ordinary plastic panels, which can age and crack over time, leading to uneven water flow.

Valve and Hose: Choose a ceramic valve core for excellent sealing, smooth opening and closing, and a lifespan of over 500,000 cycles (13 years if used 10 times daily). Choose a double-buckle stainless steel braided hose with a tightly braided outer layer (≥16 strands) and an EPDM rubber inner layer (anti-aging and high-temperature resistant). Avoid single-buckle or plastic hoses, which are prone to cracking and leaking.

3. Choose the type based on your needs: overhead, handheld, or thermostatic showerhead.

Choose the appropriate showerhead type based on your bathroom space, usage habits, and budget.

Handheld showerhead (standalone): Suitable for small bathrooms or rentals. Flexible installation (can be installed with a simple bracket) makes it convenient for rinsing, cleaning bathroom corners, or bathing pets. They're relatively inexpensive (usually 50-200 yuan), but their coverage is limited and they need to be moved manually.

Overhead showerhead + handheld combination: Recommended for families. The overhead showerhead provides a wide-area shower experience, while the handheld handle is suitable for localized cleaning. Some models feature a height-adjustable lift rod for different heights and a storage tray for shampoo and shower gel. They offer comprehensive functionality and are priced between 200-800 yuan.

Thermostatic showerhead: Suitable for those sensitive to water temperature (such as the elderly and children). They feature a built-in thermostatic valve cartridge that allows for a fixed water temperature (usually 38°C) to prevent alternating hot and cold water temperatures. Most models also feature a scalding safety lock to prevent accidental burns. However, note that thermostatic showerheads require high water pressure (0.3-0.6 MPa) and are not recommended for low-pressure environments. They typically cost over 500 yuan. Concealed showerheads: Ideal for bathrooms where plumbing was pre-installed during renovations. The main unit is recessed into the wall, leaving only the showerhead and handheld unit visible. This creates a cleaner, more compact design and saves space, making it suitable for modern minimalist or minimalist luxury bathrooms. However, installation is complex (requiring professional installation), subsequent repairs are challenging, and the price is high (usually over 1,000 yuan).

4. Pay attention to details: Improving user convenience

Small details can significantly enhance the user experience. When purchasing, consider the following three key points:

Easy-to-clean design: In addition to the silicone water outlet, some showerheads feature "self-cleaning features" (such as a removable, flushable showerhead) or an "anti-fouling coating" (to reduce scale buildup), making them ideal for those who prefer less frequent cleaning.

Water-saving performance: Prefer showerheads with "National Level 2 Water-Saving Certification or Higher." These showerheads typically use a flow control valve to control water flow (≤9.5L per minute). These showerheads use over 30% less water than standard showerheads, saving on water bills over time. They are suitable for environmentally conscious areas or those experiencing water shortages.

Installation and After-Sales Service: If you're installing it yourself, choose a model that requires no tools (such as a quick-release hose that can be tightened by hand). If your bathroom has a special connection (such as a concealed installation connection), confirm the showerhead connection size in advance (usually a G1/2 universal connection, while some imported brands use G3/4, requiring an adapter). Also, pay attention to after-sales service, prioritizing brands with a warranty of at least three years. Leaks, valve core failures, and other issues can be repaired or replaced free of charge.
